Muhammad ali vs Cleveland Williams
by Neil Leifer
1966
This photograph interests me not because of the story behind it: Muhammad Ali knocking out Cleveland Williams. It interests me because of the technical way of the photo. Nowadays it’s not hard to get an arial shot with the use of drones. Back in the 60s it was more technical. The lights which light up the arena usually hangs 6 meters above the mat. Because of this the lights got in the way so photographers used fisheye lenses however, this warps the entire image. So, Neil hung the camera from the light fixtures. Leifer shot film with only 12 frames in his camera also not able to see the images right after he shot them. He was guessing when he thinks was a good frame because he was on the ground using a remote control to shoot. If Muhammad took one more step forward the microphone would’ve blocked him. Same goes for Cleveland, if he was knocked out more to the right the microphone would’ve blocked him. Which makes it a bad frame.
