The passion of Muhammad Ali

by George Lois

1968

For Esquire, Lois wanted to use Muhammad Ali for the cover. Who at the time was looked down on because of him wanting to convert to Islam and not wanting to join the army for the Vietnam war. He got ripped of his boxing title and was shown as a martyr.  That’s where Lois took his inspiration from. He wanted to portray a painting of St Sebastion who also was a martyr for his religious choices.
