Selection

Nowadays we’re looking at our phone most of the time. Scrolling through the posts of your friends, people you like, inspire you giving them likes and scrolling further. Without thinking too much about posts. We’re living in a period where we consume a lot of media. How many posts have you seen online where you stood still for a moment, to think about the photograph or video? Where you actually took the time to process what you’re seeing? A lot of the posts are without meaning, are just.

That’s where the title ‘Ascending’ for my Wunderkammer comes in. Ascending comes from the sentence “Ascending the surface”. The theme hanging around the Wunderkammer is to take your time and appreciate the work. Taking a pause from all the rings and endless scrolling, finally, taking a break and taking your time looking at these amazing works about the society, climate change, and overall just real pieces. The works that I have selected and are shown are works of artists with a lot of thought put in them. Hidden stories (some personal) or works where the artists had to put a lot of effort in to make the final piece what it is. Because it isn’t just what’s on the surface, underneath is where all the beautiful meanings are, the meanings that are finally Ascending.

Themes and Keywords

It was a hard decision on what to put in to this 12-piece Wunderkammer. The number 12 symbolizes the 12 from the apostles of the New Testament. I had a catholic upbringing. Going to the church every Sunday and participating with mass. During this time, I grew a lot of dislike towards the church, as a kid it was very annoying to wake up early on your free Sunday and go to the church. Other part of me hated the church because of the homophobia there was. However, throughout the years I finally appreciated my parents for doing this. Because it made me who I am today and be kind to everyone.

At first it was all over the place, images of ceramics, commercials, and works of artists without a deeper meaning. It started with the work of Félix González-Torres “Untitled” A Portrait of Ross. His work got me into more pieces with a greater and deeper meaning with amazing stories. Eventually I picked the works by themes that interested me. Themes such as: climate change, mind awakening, minimalistic and circle of life. I asked myself “will people like the pieces as well as I do, if not, will they at least appreciate the effort that went into these works?”. Everyone has their own taste in things I know, but I hope that these works will make you think for a moment and appreciate the beauty of conceptual/contemporary art.
